What is A Health Coach?

Updated: Oct 6, 2021

I believe that coaching is the most powerful force for positive change that exists today.

Change is hard—we all understand that, right? But how do you make changes that last?

Health coaching, also referred to as wellness coaching, is a process that facilitates healthy,

sustainable behavior change by challenging a client to develop their inner wisdom, identify their values, and transform their goals into action.

Health coaching draws on the principles from positive psychology and appreciative inquiry, and the practices of motivational interviewing and goal setting. The terms "health coaching" and "wellness coaching" are used interchangeably.

Establish a relationship - It is important to have a good rapport with your coach. Not all coaches/clients are a good fit. It is fundamental not only in the initial coaching session you are connecting but also in each coaching session thereafter. A good coach tends to focus on untapped present possibilities for action while helping to make habits changes that promote lasting results.

Client education - A coach helps a client to improve self-care and healthy practices while becoming self-efficacy. One's sense of self-efficacy plays a major role in how one approaches goals, tasks, and challenges regarding one's health.

Goal setting - A coach helps and collaboratively with you to develop a step-by-step action plan for achieving your goals along with a time frame for completion.

Wellness vision - a vision circle can help you clarify your values, goals, and hopes for the lifestyle or "style of life" you have in your head or heart.

Motivational - A coach understands it is important to visualize but to get there, coaches have to focus on what’s right in front of us. And that means breaking your goal into bite-sized chunks that we can track and measure against. Stay present and set specific, measurable and attainable goals to work towards each week. A coach is someone where you can share your success each week. The great thing about breaking your goals up into smaller chunks is that you have more opportunities to celebrate. The truth is staying highly motivated is not realistic. Most people see a drop in motivation as a signal of failure, but it's not! Your relationship with a coach is important. When you feel less motivated and feel like giving up that is when you reach out to your coach.

We all know that fad diets do not work, yes they can melt the weight off fast, but fad diets neglect to maintain that weight loss.

Deciding to improve body weight and eat healthy can take a lot of hard work and diligence but, most importantly, requires true lifestyle change.

NOTE: A coach is the most powerful force for positive change that exists today!
