Hot flashes are often dismissed as “just menopause.”

Something women are expected to tolerate or quickly suppress.
I do not see them that way.
Hot flashes are one of the clearest ways the body communicates that something is out of balance.
They are not random. They are not just about estrogen. And they are not something you have to ignore.
For many women, hot flashes are connected to blood sugar swings, stress hormones, poor sleep, and a nervous system that is carrying too much load.
When we slow down and listen, the body usually points us in the right direction.
The Blood Sugar Connection Most Women Are Never Told About
One of the most common patterns I see in women with frequent or intense hot flashes is unstable blood sugar.
Here is what is happening.
When blood sugar rises too high after a meal and then drops too quickly, the brain reacts. It interprets that drop as a threat. To protect you, it releases adrenaline.
Adrenaline:Raises blood sugarIncreases heart rateSends blood to the skinTurns on the stress response
In midlife, the brain’s temperature control system becomes more sensitive. With estrogen fluctuating or lower, even a small adrenaline surge can feel intense.
That surge is often experienced as:Sudden heatFlushingSweatingHeart racingFeeling unsettled or anxious
This is why hot flashes often:Happen at nightShow up after high-sugar or high-carb mealsWorsen with alcoholIncrease during stress
They are not happening for no reason. They are part of a blood sugar and stress hormone loop.
Menopause Lowers the Buffer
Stress Pulls the Trigger
Estrogen helps keep the nervous system calm and resilient. As estrogen changes, the nervous system becomes easier to activate.
Add in:Chronic stress, poor sleep, not eating enough – you body needs nutrients. Not enough protein and over-exercising can add more stress and trigger hot flashes.
The body stays in a higher alert state. Adrenaline and cortisol stay elevated longer than they should. The nervous system does not fully settle.
This is when women often say:“I feel wired but tired.”“I wake up hot at the same time every night.”“My heart races out of nowhere.”
This is not anxiety.
It is a nervous system that needs more stability.
Why Hot Flashes Are Worse for Some Women
Two women can have similar hormone levels and very different symptoms. One key reason is how efficiently the body clears stress hormones like adrenaline.
Adrenaline is meant to rise and fall quickly. But the body needs the right nutrients to break it down.
This process depends on:Adequate proteinB vitamins such as B6, B12, folate, and riboflavin
When these are low, adrenaline lingers. Heat lasts longer. Palpitations feel stronger. Hot flashes feel more intense.
This is not about being sensitive or stressed out.It is about chemistry.
Progesterone and the Calming Effect
Progesterone is often overlooked, yet it plays an important role in calming the brain.
When used appropriately, oral micronized progesterone can:Help the brain feel more settledSupport deeper, more restorative sleepReduce nighttime stress hormone surges and lower the intensity of hot flashes
Research shows that progesterone taken at bedtime can reduce hot flashes and night sweats, especially in women who also struggle with sleep.
Progesterone is not right for everyone. But for some women, it can be a key piece of calming the system.
New Medications and the Bigger Picture
There are newer non-hormonal medications that can reduce hot flashes by acting on the brain’s temperature center. These can be helpful for some women.
What they do not address is the root cause:Blood sugar balanceStress hormone regulationSleep qualityMetabolic health
Symptom relief matters. But lasting change comes from understanding why the symptoms started.
Hot Flashes Are Feedback
You can get relief from Hot flashes. They are feedback.
They are the nervous system signaling that it needs more support, more consistency, and better inputs.
When we understand the signals and respond appropriately, the body often feel so much better. Sleep improves. Your Energy improves and your confidence returns.
This work is not about forcing symptoms away.It is about restoring balance and optimization your body’s systems, so those symptoms no longer show up.
